How to Add a 'favicon' to Your Terapad Site
Having a 'favicon' image as a little 'logo' for your site that appears in the URL bar of popular browsers like Firefox and IE7 is a popular thing to do. Plus it sort of makes your site image that little bit more professional.Adding a favicon to your terapad site can be very simple and will take only a few minutes if you have a nice little logo, letter image, or photo you want to use - plus you have a simple image or photo editor to get your image into the best useable shape!
Here are the steps you can take to put a favicon onto your site so that it appears on the URL bar, and on the Tab (when using multiple tab browsing).
Adding a Favicon to your Terapad website - Step-by-Step
1) Select an image for your favicon. Ideally
this should be square and preferably not 'too'
big. An image with dimensions like 64x64 pixel
works well when it is resized to the standard
16x16 icon format.
You can use most simple graphic or photo editing
packages to crop and resize an image to suit.
It is best to choose either simple 'letter'
(acronym) graphics - like the 'g' for google,
or 'y' for yahoo! - or a very simple graphic
image...as all detail is lost when the favicon
is reduced to its 'working size'
2) Save your image as a jpg or gif format (which
all editors generally do by default on saving.
Then 'transform' this to a favicon.ico file. You
can do this by finding some free or paid favicon
creation software but by far the simplest way
is to use a free favicon image creation service
such http://www.favicon.co.uk (which is free
and very simple to use.)
You need to upload your selected image, then
select the 16x16 size, and then press the button
and the file image will be shown. Check it looks
OK - if there is no image your uploaded file type
was probably wrong, or maybe too big. Simply
resize it in youe desktop editor then try uploading
again. Once you are happy with the icon you can
download it to a suitable place on your desktop.
NOTE: You could actually try uploading a small
jpg or gif file instead of an ico file BUT they may
look deformed or appear less clear. It is better,
and will be 'read' properly if you take the few
moments to create and use an ico image file.
3) Once you have saved your ico file - log in to
your Terapad content management dashboard.
On the navigation at the top go to "Assets", then
choose "Images", then upload your ico file using
the left hand side upload facility.
NOTE: You will NOT see an image as this is an
ico file (you will see a little page like icon instead -
don't worry about this) simply click on the
'blue curcle/image code' icon and the window with
the image code will appear.
Take a copy of the whole image code that includes
the domain.
4) Now paste this image address into the following
code snippet where it should look like the
http://YOURDOMAIN...etc part with your favicon ico
file at the end (if you copy and paste this snippet below
into notepad it should all appear as ONE line of code):
<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/vnd.microsoft.icon" href="http://YOURDOMAIN.terapad.com/...etc...favicon.ico" />
TIP: Save this in Notepad first for ease-of-use,
then paste in your icon image address and you
will have the whole thing ready for using in a
minute:-
5) Now go to the "Integrate" section (where there
is a little heart icon on the top navigation of
your control panel)
In this section note the left hand options and
click on: "Embed Code"
This section cannot receive normal html instructions
because it goes within the <head></head> section of
your website (you will not typically be editing this
directly). But the snippet you have just created will
be understood.
Copy the snippet with your icon code, making sure
you take the WHOLE code, and paste it into the box
in the Embed Code section.
Now press 'save changes' (button at bottom under
the box you just entered information into)
6) Click the link in the top right-hand corner
to visit your site - and you should see your favicon
appear next to your domain name in the URL address
bar, and in the top of any tab (IF you are using
tabbed browsing on IE or Firefox).
